History Of Andaman

Before booking any Andaman tour package from Kolkata, know some interesting facts from the history of Andaman. For several thousand years at the very least, the Andaman & Nicobar Islands have been inhabited. The documentation of the earlier archaeological evidence goes back some 2,200 years. However, it is found that the habitation goes back to 30000 -60000 years, well into the Middle Palaeolithic, as indicated by genetic, cultural and linguistic isolation studies. Through the vast majority of this time, the various Andamanese people maintained their separated existence in the Andaman Islands diversifying into distinct linguistic, cultural and territorial groups. The indigenous people of Andamans were the Great Andamanese, who collectively represented at least 10 distinct subgroups and languages, the Jarawa, the Jungle (or Rutland Jarawa), the Onge and the Sentinelese (the most isolated of all the groups), when they first came into sustained contact by outside groups by the 1850s. A similarly isolated and lengthy association with the islands is there by the indigenous people of the Nicobars (unrelated to the Andamanese). There are two main groups, namely the Nicobarese, or Nicobari living throughout many of the islands and the Shompen, restricted to the interior of Great Nicobar.
